The city's commitment to sustainability and the creation of a Low Emission Zone (ZBE) took a firm step forward last October, since of the nine companies that were bidding to develop the system to control access to the ZBE, it was awarded to the consortium of companies made up of Applied Road Technologies Teva, S. L. and Tevaseñal, S. A.
The City Council is working to have the ZBE operational and functioning by the end of next year. This is the maximum authorized deadline to comply with the requirements set by the European Union for municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, 80% of the operation's cost financed through the so-called Next Generation.
Municipalities like Torremolinos, Benalmádena, or Marbella are also setting the challenge of developing these measures throughout 2023.

This sustainable urban mobility plan has as its main challenge to reduce vehicles, which according to municipal data conclude that through the geographically delimited area, about 203,000 vehicles transit daily. With the Low Emission Zone, in five years there will be about 183,150 vehicles transiting the area, a figure that will decrease to 172,975 in 10 years, and to 162,800 in fifteen years. This will bring about a reduction of the polluting effects on the main arteries of the city such as Alameda Principal, Paseo del Parque, Paseo de los Curas, Paseo Marítimo Pablo Ruiz Picasso, and Avenida de Andalucía, among others.
With this situation that the City of Málaga aims to have operational by the end of 2023, the ambitious Coastal Plan is added, which aims to create a pedestrian and green space from Córdoba Street to the Cánovas del Castillo roundabout, next to the Noble Hospital.

The Plan presented by the mayor of Málaga, Francisco de la Torre, last July 2021, aims to be one of the most significant urban transformation actions in the city, adding 65,000 m to the city2 of pedestrian space and green areas. The Plan will also include the undergrounding of traffic on Paseo de los Curas to expand the Park by 18,000 m2 and thus complete the pedestrian connection with Muelle Dos of the Port.
